Mark Hone Posted 12 May , 2005 Share Posted 12 May , 2005 As I have mentioned before on the forum I am beginning serious research into the wartime history of the 5th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers (Bury Territorials). I have already received considerable assistance from several Pals, notably Ken Lees. and a couple of people have already mentioned relatives who served with the unit. I would be very interested in any photographs, documentation that Pals might have about the unit or soldiers who served with it. I have access to quite a range of material at the LF museum, where I am helping with reclassification of their archive at the moment. One problem with 5th LF is that a lot of material was destroyed in a fire at the Castle Armoury TA centre in Bury in 1942 ,caused by the Home Guard rather than Hermann Goering. The 5th fielded 3 battalions in the Great War: 1/5th which served with 42nd Division at Gallipoli and later in Egypt and on the Western Front, 2/5th which served with the famous 55th Division and 3/5th which had a relatively brief active existence with 66th Division, fighting only one major action on 9th October 1917 before succumbing to the 1918 cull.
