Jock,

I have no idea where it came from. I have a list of names on a Church memorial tablet which gives the no with a "b" i think, but the Essex SDGW doesnt have it. Must be a typo by somebody. (hopefully not me! )

I will leave it at that

Thanks

Patrick,

There is a MIC for a 24152 Pte E J Cowling Essex Regt.

Online MIC

Think that is your man - the 'b' has crept in from somewhere.

For the Australians at least, when an a or b was added to a serviceman's number it meant that there was another person in that unit with the same number.

When I first joined the forum I asked the same question but never got an answer.

My father was in the machine gun corp and on a postcard was written

87492 8th Batt MGC No 5 Coy 7913B

I have looked everywhere on internet but never have found an explanation for the letter B.

well what can i say. i assumed it was simply a typing mistake since it does nt appear elsewhere but now with these replies maybe the "b" was added at some stage !!
