Patrick,

You must believe when I assure you I'm not stalking you..... ;)

The N.A. have a list of abbreviations: Ranks

This is what they have to say in answer to your question:

SQ. CPL. MJR. Squadron Corporal Major BA

SQ. Q.M. CPL. Squadron Quarter Master Corporal BA

SQ. Q.M. SJT. Squadron Quarter Master Serjeant BA

SQ. S. MJR. Squadron Serjeant Major BA

See you around,

Michael

Very true as far as I know.

The Essex Yeomanry were Cavalry.

Cheers,

Michael

Michael, again many thanks for that info.

I have no problem with you stalking me as long as you keep coming up with the answers! :D and should we ever meet on some far flung battlefield you could buy me a pint or three (in the bar not the battlefield!)

cheers

I'm catching up with old postings on the list.

The theory that this man may have been Essex Yeomanry works for me:

James Duggan

34156 Pte, Essex Regt [he was therefore part of a large block that transferred from EY to Essex Regt, mainly 1st and 9th Bns in Dec 1916]

646978 Labour Corps

BWM/VM (WO329/1871)

I believe he can be identified with a Cpl J Duggan who appears in a photo of 3/1st EY in June 1915 (he would have reverted to Private on going to the front).

His rank might easily have been garbled, whether or not deliberately, in transmission. What is the source and date of your reference?
