Muerrisch Posted 7 May , 2005 Share Posted 7 May , 2005 The Sergeant Bugler was the Rifles equivalent of a Sergeant Drummer, otherwise unofficially known as Bugle/Drum Major. In charge of the Bugles, 16 men, often augmented by those under training. Sgt was responsible to Adjutant for training the buglers.
Sgt_Hazell_Great_Grandson Posted 7 May , 2005 Author Share Posted 7 May , 2005 Thank you. When you say training do you mean training of playing the bugle or other training as well ? During battle would these guys be soldiers or would they perform other duties ?
Muerrisch Posted 7 May , 2005 Share Posted 7 May , 2005 Training to play the bugle. Unless paraded as a bugle band, the men served in the four companies, four men in each. The Sgt was nominally attached to a company for admin. purposes. Whereas bandsmen were trained as stretcher bearers, the bugles were not [usually] and their employment varied. The company commander had, before the war and in the early days, a bugler attached to him, to relay orders. Use of the bugle in battle lapsed considerably, although used as recently as the Korean War. Other tasks for buglers included ammunition supply. Interestingly, their status was above "rank and file" and they were paid more. All the above from memory, a bit pressed for time.
