green_acorn Posted 5 May , 2005 Share Posted 5 May , 2005 The AWM has created a new page with various examples of maps from the campaign, including maps from the landings, trench, cemetry and Turkish maps. Very nicely done! http://www.awm.gov.au/gmaps/index.asp
Paul Reed Posted 5 May , 2005 Share Posted 5 May , 2005 Thanks for flagging that up - some really nice and useful maps on there. A while ago I put on line some of the maps of Gallipoli I have in my own collection here (also includes photos): http://battlefields1418.50megs.com/gallipoli_photos.htm
bluedog Posted 9 May , 2005 Share Posted 9 May , 2005 Paul Reed or any other Helles expert I have just returned from a month on the Peninsula and for a couple of days retraced the landing, rest area and line of advance of the 2nd brigade AIF during the lead up and involvement in 2nd Krithia. About 1 Km. north of Skew Bridge Cemetery on the west side of the Seddelbahir- Alcitepe road I came across a trench system amongest the pines. On Maj. Holts map it would seem to be in a direct line drawn between Zimmermans Farm and Pink Farm Cemetery. Any info please. Regards Peter
michaeldr Posted 11 May , 2005 Share Posted 11 May , 2005 Peter, Hope that you enjoyed your visit to Gallipoli Re the trench question Until someone else comes up with a better idea I think that you must have been in the area of ‘Observation Hill’ As far as I know the map below is from a NA file [sorry, no ref numb] in any event, it was reproduced by Len Sellers in his magazine ‘RND’ Issue No.1, June 1997 Regards Michael D.R. bluedog Posted 11 May , 2005 Share Posted 11 May , 2005 Michael I would say that you are spot on with Observation Hill and as an added bonus the RAAF Officer that I was showing around had a great Uncle in the RND Many Thanks Peter
The Plummed Goose Posted 15 May , 2005 Share Posted 15 May , 2005 Dear Peter, I can also reconfirm it is definitely observation hill/Backhouse Post. I walk(ed) this area regulary. Commodore Backhouse (2nd Naval Brigade) establised his HQ here in early May. I think the trenches are part of the line after the landing before the second battle of Krithia.
