Can anyone tell me what happened to Peter McCaig please.

PETER McCAIG

Lieutenant

54th Sqdn., Royal Air Force

and, Scottish Horse

who died on

Friday, 27th September 1918. Age 22.

Son of John and Grace Ralston McCaig, of Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire

Cemetery: HAYNECOURT BRITISH CEMETERY, Nord, France

Grave Reference I. B. 25.

Lt P McCaig was flying Sopwith Camel B6421 of No 54 Sqn when he was shot down near Cambrai on 27 September 1918. He left on a Special Bombing mission at 1135 (which probably means that his flight was sent out to bomb something in particular, rather than a target of opportunity) and later became involved in combat with 10-12 enemy aircraft; B6421 was last seen spinning out of control from 2000 feet at about 1210hrs.

Three German fighter pilots were credited with a victory which may be B6421:

Ltn Hermann Vallendor of Jasta 2;

Ltn Fritz Rumey of Jasta 5; and

Ltn Ernst Bormann of Jasta 2.
