flip Posted 4 May , 2005 Share Posted 4 May , 2005 Im am searching for the following soldier of the Royal Welsh regiment: Corporal Thomas Samuel Williams - Royal Welsh (from Gwersyllt, Wrexham) Born in 1899, he joined in 1915 (age 17). He was thought to be fighting near Ypres, defending a bridge "to the last man". He was injured on 23rd April, 1917 and taken prisoner. He died of his wounds on 20th May 1917, aged 19. Would he have been buried in a civilian cemetry somewhere in Germany. We think possibly Berlin. If so, how do I go about finding out? I have searched through the CWGC site for him and can find no trace.
kinnethmont Posted 4 May , 2005 Share Posted 4 May , 2005 Flip Looks like some of your details are wrong, this appears to be your man. He is buried in Belgium. Kortrijk was in German hands for most of the war and certainly at the time your man died of wounds. This does tend to confirm he was a POW there. He had transferred to the MGC Only Thomas Samuel Williams listed in Soldiers Died was Thomas Samual Williams Private 36812 Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) Died of wounds 26/5/1918 Theatre France & Flanders Gwersyllt, Denbigh Enlisted at Gwersyllt Hill Formerly 7294 Royal Welch Fusiliers CWGC details are WILLIAMS, THOMAS SAMUEL Initials: T S Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment: Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) Unit Text: 9th Bn.
