adrianjohn Posted 2 May , 2005 Share Posted 2 May , 2005 This is my first post to the Forum and my first venture into detailed research of military history - so I hope I'm getting it right! I'm seeking information on the men of the Northumberland villages of Glanton and Whittingham who joined up for WW1. The photo I have of these anonymous lads shows they joined Alexandra, Princess of Wales Own Yorkshire Regiment (19th Regiment of Foot) The Green Howards - not the Northumberland Fusiliers as I would have expected. Only one of the fifteen in the picture survived the war. Is there anyway I can obtain a list of recruits? Which centre would the Regiment of been recruiting from? Newcastle, Alnwick etc.? Could they have joined the Regiment and then transferred to other regiments? Hope someone out there can help. Many thanks. adrian
Hambo Posted 2 May , 2005 Share Posted 2 May , 2005 Adrian Welcome to the forum! I have done a search of the data base "Soliders died in the Great War" using the birthplace of Glanton and Whittingham and have turned up the following. These are only the soldiers who died not the survivors. From Glanton Adams, Thomas Pvt 6th Batt Cameron Highlanders DOW 9.9.17 Barclay, Thomas Pvt 1/7th Northumberland Fus. KIA 14.11.16 Bonnier, Charles Pvt RASC Died 22.12.16 Davison, Norman Pvt 1st Batt West Yorks KIA 8.6.18 Gray, Andrew Cpl 1/7th Northumberland Fus KIA 16.6.15 Grey, John Cpl Royal Horse Artillery KIA 8.11.17 Henderson, George Samuel Pvt 2nd Batt West Yorks Died 15.8.18 Moffitt, Charles Pvt 9th Batt KOYLI KIA 9.4.17 Paton, William 1/4th Royal Scots Fus KIA 19.9.18 From Whittingham Clark, William Pvt 1st Batt Northumberland Fus. KIA 25.3.18 Allan,Edward Pvt 8th Batt Northumberland Fus DOW 15.10.15 Davidson, Peter L/Cpl 7th Batt West Yorks DOW 6.3.17 Gray, Arthur Sgt 1/7th Batt Northumberland Fus. KIA 15.9.16 Hall, William Pvt 7th KOYLI KIA 31.10.16 Hunter, WIlliam L/Cpl 4th Batt West Yorks Died 12.10.18 Miller, Robert Pvt 2nd Batt West Yorks KIA 12.10.16 Potts, Walter Pvt 1st Batt Northamptonshire regt KIA 24.9.18 Robson, John Pvt Machine Gun Corps DOW 19.9.16 Roxby, James Gunner RGA KIA 19.12.17 Slassor, Walter Pvt 1/4th Northumberland Fus KIA 26.10.17 Steven, ALex Pvt 10th Batt West Yorks KIA 26.9.15 Storey, William Pvt 10th Batt West Yorks KIA 1.7.16 Thompson, Thomas Pvt 1st Batt Durham Light Infantry DOW 7.11.16 Trotter Robert Pvt 15th Batt Northumberland Fus Died 29.6.16 SDGW is by no means infallible but should capture the bulk of them. One or two were formerly in other units including the Northumberand Fusiliers. Alnwick seems to be the area of recruitment which turns up the most but as many of the men may have left the area of their birth before joining up they seem to have signed up all over the country from London to Scotland. I hope this is of some use to you All the best Hambo
