Fred W Posted 30 April , 2005 Share Posted 30 April , 2005 Why was the name Petty Officer created? Was it to indicate someone lesser than an officer? Fred
KONDOA Posted 30 April , 2005 Share Posted 30 April , 2005 I believe a PO was an NCO as opposed to a full officer so generally I think you are correct. Roop
HERITAGE PLUS Posted 30 April , 2005 Share Posted 30 April , 2005 Naval personnel below Officer rank are know as ratings. Petty Officer rate was first defined in the regulations of 1808, though they were in existence many years before this. In 1827 they were ordered to wear a single anchor with crown above; crossed anchors with crown above became the Petty Officers' badge in 1857. PO is a Senior Rate equivalent to a SNCO in the army.
