BeppoSapone Posted 30 April , 2005 Share Posted 30 April , 2005 I think that the dead ones were buried in the UK - died of wounds, accidents and illness. The live ones were shipped back to Australia! Although the odd member of the AIF may have had his body repatriated, Empire servicemen were supposed to have been buried where they died. You need to look to the Americans for shipping thousands of bodies home.
stiletto_33853 Posted 30 April , 2005 Share Posted 30 April , 2005 It would be interesting to know but 11 Australians are buried in various cemeteries around town here, this does not include the English who were serving with the Austalian forces. Terry Denham Posted 30 April , 2005 Share Posted 30 April , 2005 The precise figures are..... There are 2557 Australian WW1 CWGC war graves in the UK. There are 4661 Australian WW2 CWGC war graves in the UK. Only one WW1 Australian body was repatriated to Australia - plus the Australian 'Unknown Soldier'. The figures do not include any Australians who may have been in the British forces etc as they are classified as 'British'.
