& the cemetery info

Cemetery: BEACH CEMETERY, ANZAC

Country: Turkey

Location Information: Beach Cemetery is situated on what was known as Hell Spit, at the southern point of Anzac Cove. The graves lie between the Kelia-Suvla road and the beach, and the Cross is on the east side of the road.

Historical Information: The eight month campaign in Gallipoli was fought by Commonwealth and French forces in an attempt to force Turkey out of the war, to relieve the deadlock of the Western Front in France and Belgium, and to open a supply route to Russia through the Dardanelles and the Black Sea. The Allies landed on the peninsula on 25-26 April 1915; the 29th Division at Cape Helles in the south and the Australian and New Zealand Corps north of Gaba Tepe on the west coast, an area soon known as Anzac. Beach Cemetery was used from the day of the landing at Anzac, almost until the evacuation. There are 391 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in the cemetery. Special memorials commemorate 11 casualties believed to be buried among them. 22 of the burials are unidentified.

No. of Identified Casualties: 369

Arthur Ledwidge’s records (41 pages) are available online from the National Archives of Australia……………..Here is a condensed synopsis of the information they contain

Arthur was born in Carrathool, New South Wales & was a Labour by profession. His full name was Arthur James Ledwidge & his parents were Michael & Rose. He enlisted on 10th November 1914 in Liverpool New South Wales. At the time of his enlistment he was 21 years old. Physically he was 6ft 1in tall & 12st 7lbs in weight. He had a fair complexion & grey eyes & under distinguishing features it states Arthur had a slight scar on his right leg. He is also listed as a Roman Catholic. There is not a lot in the records with regards to his death. It simply states Arthur was killed in action & it was noted that he was initially buried on the hill to the right of the landing place. …………..Arthur’s personal effects are described as 1 Brown Paper Parcel containing 1 Testament (I assume this is a Bible), 1 Note book & Photographs……………….There is a document dated 1915 within the file which confirms that Arthur’s mother Rose was granted a dependents pension of £12 per annum upon his death. There is also documentation noting an amendment to this pension increasing it in 1917.
