robbie Posted 27 April , 2005 Share Posted 27 April , 2005 Hi all, I have an AMerican colleague planning a visit to the UK later this year. I would like to take him around the battlefields and cemeteries (with a guide) and was wondering where, other than the 3 gravestones I photographed in Lijssenhoeck, the US men are buried. Many thanks Robbie
healdav Posted 27 April , 2005 Share Posted 27 April , 2005 Montfaucon for the Ardennes and Thiaucourt for the St. Mihiel salient. Luxembourg for the Battle of the Bulge and a cemetery not too far away in Belgium (forget the name) for many other casualties. You will find a complete list on the ABMC website. Tom Morgan Posted 27 April , 2005 Share Posted 27 April , 2005 The nearest American cemetery to Lijssenthoek (and it's probably the one that Healdav means) is the Flanders Fields American Cemetery at Waregem. Pictures of it here. Tom
CROONAERT Posted 27 April , 2005 Share Posted 27 April , 2005 and was wondering where, other than the 3 gravestones I photographed in Lijssenhoeck, the US men are buried. Mainly back in the USA. More than 60% were re-patriated after the war. There are only 20 ABMC cemeteries in Europe covering both world wars. They tend to only cover one war apart from one which is representative of the two world wars. Dave.

Glosters Posted 27 April , 2005 Share Posted 27 April , 2005 I was at Brookwood Cemetery a couple of weeks ago and there are US WWI graves there. First time I have seen any in a British cemetery. Steve
Terry Denham Posted 27 April , 2005 Share Posted 27 April , 2005 The Brookwood US soldiers are not technically in a British cemetery. The plot in the centre of Brookwood Military Cemetery is known as the Brookwood American Cemetery and is separately administered by the ABMC. Splitting hairs, I know! CROONAERT Posted 28 April , 2005 Share Posted 28 April , 2005 Luxembourg for the Battle of the Bulge ...and also "Ardennes" Cemetery near Neupre (Neuville-en-Codroz) not far from Liege for the Bulge battle. Another nearby this is Henri-Chappelle on the other side of Liege. Anyway, here's a full listing of ABMC cemeteries and their opening times...
