Can any forum members suggest how long a suitable tour of the Gallipoli battlefields would take? I am planning on taking a group of between 10 and 15 next year and have no ideal how long a decent trip will take. Can justice be done in a week or does it need to be longer. Can it also be done without a guide??

Many thanks in advance for any help.

The time you need on the battlefield will depend upon the scope and level of your interest, exactly how much you want to see and whether you want to consider much walking over rough ground or not (I'm thinking age & ability of the party). It will also depend where you stay as using accomodation in Cannakkale will give you a wider choice but adds extra travelling time across the Dardanelles each morning.

Having said all that think in terms of a week with six days touring split as two days at Helles; one at Anzac; one at Suvla; an extra day at one of the three areas and a day to spend on the Asian side of the Dardanelles (Dardanos battery; Troy perhaps; the museum at Canakkale and some shopping in Canakkale). That should provide good general coverage and give you enough time to see most sights. If your focus is different you may want more time in some areas and less in others.

If you travel in and out via Istanbul you or your party may want to add some time there - it's a wonderful city.

As for whether you need a guide. You can do without but it will be hard work getting around; map reading; finding less obvious places to visit etc and a guide who is wholly familiar with the territory and campaign will help speed you round and get best value - the choice is yours but local knowledge does help especially if you are not familiar with the area.

By all means if you want any further detailed answers drop me a PM/email.

If you pass through Istanbul consider a day there to see some of the WW1 related sites notably the Naval Museum in Besiktas (undoubtedly the best 50ps worth of WW1 museum you are ever likely to visit) complete with depth-charged submarine hulk in garden; the Army Museum in Taksim; the CWGC cemetery at Hydapasar with its Criman connections next to the old Scutari Hospital; and St.George's Church in Pera with its memorial screens to those lost at Gallipoli.

You can also visit the Turkish Army Barracks (by appointment) which were the Scutari barracks and which include a fascinating and worthwhile Florence Nightingale museum.

Istanbul has one of the best natural settings of any city in the world, incredible architecture , loads of history. A really good visit and place to stay is Pera Palace Hotel, the hotel for Orient Express when it opened. Walk the corridors, look at name plates on the doors of those who have stayed there.
