BULLDOGFOGG Posted 25 April , 2005 Share Posted 25 April , 2005 17337 Pte William Shaw DCM was injured at Festubert on 25 Sept 1915: His citation reads: For Conspicuous galantry on 25th Sept near Festubert. When a retirement was ordered he helped a wounded officer back to safety behind our parapet. He then heard that the Officer, whose servant he was, was wounded and at once went out to his assistance under an exceptionally accurate and heavy machine-gun and rifle fire, being himself wounded doing so. I have the war diary for this period and a list of the officers of the Bn. I even have the CO's orders for this attack, which may be of interest to the 9th RWF 58TH Bde researchers. Can anyone shed any light on the how i can determine who he was batman to and who he saved that day in Festubert. He died 6.7.1916 of his wounds in Boulougne. John_Hartley Posted 27 April , 2005 Share Posted 27 April , 2005 Foggy Nothing in the regimental history to help, either. The only thing I can suggest is to try to track down the local newspaper for wherever he came from. The officer may well have written to the family and this may be mentioned in any obituary. Other than that, you may be at a dead end. John
