Remembered Today:

SS and SV prefixes

Is the difference between SS and SV a question of size?

If so what is the changeover point?

Best wishes

David

I believe.........

SS = Steam Ship - steam engine(s)

SV = Sailing Vessel - sails

Originally, SS meant Screw Ship or Screw Steamer, as opposed to PS which meant Paddle Ship/Steamer. [e.g the PS Waverley preserved excursion vessel].

In later years, i.e from the late 19c by which time there were few Paddlers about, SS was generally taken as Steam Ship
