Hello,

As conscription had not been introduced by the time he enlisted he could well be considered a member of Kitcheners Army. As he joined an RE unit he was probably skilled in a construction trade and such men were the subject of special appeals.

Joe,

You will find the War Diary for your Grandad's unit at the PRO under the following file number WO 95/337.

If you are able to get there it could provide you with details about where the unit was located but do not expect to find him mentioned by name, the diaries are more about where the unit was and what they were doing.

Hope you get to see it. If not, I am sure one of the "Pals" will take a look at it for you.

My Grandfather was also in the RE but I have not been able to locate his unit, even though his service record exists, so you are quite lucky really.

Regards
