Can anyone shed any light on this? Who or what was a Mussalman?

Why on earth didn't I think of that? Sometimes the obvious only hits you when someone points it out to you!

Many thanks

A true believer - a moslem. Phil B

..and also a race of people originating in an area of the Punjab (who, as it happens, are probably 90% muslim, but not necessarily so.)

(By the way, "Dogras" are another race originating in North East Kashmir. The 41st Dogras had four "Dogra" companies , so this man would possibly have been noticably "different" from many of his comrades)

Dave.

That figures Dave, there were 3 headstones in a row: "A Hindu Soldier" "A Sikh soldier" and "A Mussalman soldier".

I suppose religous differences could all be forgotten in death.

They were all in Rue-du-Bacquerot No 1 cemetery near Neuve Chapelle.

For more info, there was a good thread ref Indian soldiers in France a few months ago. Also the book "Sepoys in the Trenches" gives a very readable insight into the history of Indian forces in France 1914 - 1915.
