Andrew Hesketh Posted 23 June , 2003 Share Posted 23 June , 2003 The so-called 100 Days at the end of the war.... is there a date upon which historians agree it began? Of course if it's exactly 100 days before the armistice I'm going to feel a bit silly, but on the basis that the 100 Years War didn't last 100 years I'm assuming a similar approximation here All the best, Andrew
Kate Wills Posted 23 June , 2003 Share Posted 23 June , 2003 I had always understood that it began on 8th August 1918, the German Army's 'Black Day'. Admittedly the maths is at fault, but it is a snappy phrase.
paul guthrie Posted 24 June , 2003 Share Posted 24 June , 2003 Kate is right but things really turned around July 15 and 16 when last German offensive east of Reims failed and July 18 when Foch attacked with two US and a Morrocan Division in the spearhead. Foch realized tide of war had turned and said so July 24. Ludendorff issued his first entirely defensive order August 4 and August 14 informed Kaiser and government war could not be won. Andrew Hesketh Posted 24 June , 2003 Author Share Posted 24 June , 2003 Thanks Kate and Paul. I had assumed it was the so-called 'Black Day', so that just about confirms it.
