Ncm1609 Posted 7 May Share Posted 7 May I believe my grandfather was at Passchendaele around 1917 I'm trying to confirm this and identify his regiment. I would appreciate any help in doing this. Regards Neil

GWF1967 Posted 7 May Share Posted 7 May (edited) The boys standing either side of your relative appear to be wearing Light Infantry badges on their jackets. If you have the original photograph, a close up of the shoulder title (badge) the seated man if wearing would help to narrow the field. Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 7 May Share Posted 7 May It's a Light Infantry badge - Durham LI or King's Shropshire LI I think.
mancpal Posted 7 May Share Posted 7 May The two in suits appear to be wearing the same shoulder title as a lapel badge. I agree with Dai. Simon

Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 7 May Share Posted 7 May Curved shoulder title suggests Territorial Force. Liverpool Rifle battalion also had a similar badge. I'm sure @FROGSMILE will know.
Admin Bob Davies Posted 7 May Admin Share Posted 7 May I would think that Somerset LI shoulder titles are more in keeping. Same with the lapel badges.
FROGSMILE Posted 7 May Share Posted 7 May (edited) Definitely light infantry given the universal bugle on shoulder straps, plus the lapel badges. I’m not sure if there’s a crown on the lapel badges? If so Durhams perhaps. Alternatively Shropshire or Somerset as Bob suggested. I don’t think Oxf and Bucks though. Where was grandfather’s home town? My money is on Durhams, or KSLI as I can see lettering on the lapel badges. Edited 7 May by FROGSMILE
Allan1892 Posted 7 May Share Posted 7 May A search of the MiCs for a V Mason / Victor Mason with a connection to a Light Infantry only came up with two men: Victor Mason -- DLI #75275 / Labour Corps #516195 / Royal Fusiliers #GS/111179 Victor H Mason-- Somerset Light Infantry #35028

The Somersets had a distinctive mural crown on top of their badge that’s not present on the lapel badges and I can definitely see lettering on the badge of the boy at left. Allan1892 Posted 7 May Share Posted 7 May If it was #75275, he was with the 18th Btn, DLI (image courtesy of Ancestry)

Probably wounded and downgraded, posted to Labour Corps, then subsequently found fit enough for garrison battalion service with the Royal Fusiliers. A not uncommon course of events. (images courtesy of Ancestry) Looks like he - the father and a special reservist - moved on paper from the Bedfordshire Regiment (where he had been a time-expired former regular) to the 11th (or 17th?) Training Reserve Battalion as part of the reorganisation of training. Edited 7 May by FROGSMILE
Ncm1609 Posted 7 May Author Share Posted 7 May Thanks for that. I was aware that my great-grandfather served as part of the training effort, he actually died in October of 1918 due to a fall at the camp. He has a war grave at Wakefield cemetery. I am also trying to discover his pre war service which I believe he served with the Bedford's. Thank you for posting this information 😊.
