gilly100 Posted 3 May Share Posted 3 May A nice photo of D Troop, A Sqdn 10th Light Horse, recently sent to me. The tall Officer (6' 1") standing in middle is GA Burkett, a Boer War participant. Note his ribbon.

stevenbecker Posted 3 May Share Posted 3 May (edited) You are most likley correct, as we don't know for sure when the photo was taken. I just finished looking at the Roll books in the NSW Liberary which cover two peroids of the war A Sqn 1st ALHR Aug 1914 to Aug 1915 A Sqn 1st ALHR Aug 1918 to Mar 1919 The interesting thing was the changes to the regt during these periods of the men. In Aug 1914 to the landing in 1915, changes happened all the time, men given in one Troop could and did change as men moved around before embarking. These changes continued in Egypt and the landing, as Reinf came into the show. But that's the best list I can give, made up from far to many sources to be 100% correct And until some one else can produce one, we may never know for sure. But you never know whats out there still Edited 3 May by stevenbecker
gilly100 Posted 4 May Author Share Posted 4 May Steve Clearly it was taken in late 1914 or early 1915 prior to embarkation. Ian

stevenbecker Posted 4 May Share Posted 4 May Mate, I was going throw the Regt and Grad list for the AIF dated revised 6 Dec 1914 A Sqn 10 LHR shows Todd Capt OC (2-10-14) Piesse 2/Lt 2ic (2-10-14) with Sqn officers Gibsone 2/Lt A troop (28-10-14) Heller 2/Lt B Troop (28-10-14) Burkett 2/Lt C Troop (2-10-14) Colpitts 2/Lt D Troop (1-11-14) So the photo must have been taken before that date? gilly100 Posted 4 May Author Share Posted 4 May Steve Burkett was 6'1'' and had been in the 18th and 25th LH prior to joining the AIF's 10th Light Horse; see his badges. He got the QSA which we can also see. Colpitts was 5'11.5" and was 40 years old on enlistment. He was QSA and KSA and not listed as with service with 18th or 25th LH. Andrew I don't know where, could be either for location, although it would be either Claremont or Guildford, rather than BB Hill. Ian
stevenbecker Posted 4 May Share Posted 4 May Than again when I did the 12 LHR, many years ago before handing off the Ken Hollis before I went OS, I gave him a booklet of the 12 LHR, which showed photos of each Troop before embarking. These I found out were not all correct, as changes happen, some soon after the photos While I have no dought your right, that it is Burkett we have to consider why he was with D Troop, when all the records say he was not? Not the first time we have run in to this, where sources differ.
stevenbecker Posted 4 May Share Posted 4 May Yes its not BB Hill as photos of the 10th LHR Reinf of my GF show them under tents in 1915, with no wooden buildings shown So if early 1914 then a estabished camp it must be so where?
stevenbecker Posted 6 May Share Posted 6 May I don't know how I missed him but COLPITTS John Watson 2/Lt 10 LHR A Sqn D Troop 10-14 shown A Sqn 3 Troop (in Army lists dated 7-15) WIA 30-5-15 concussion of spine bomb in raid at Quinns Post & recom - for his part in raid evac to hosp 6-15 to hosp UK 7-15 (G) to AProvC 1 Anzac Corps HQ 9-16 prom Capt 1-17 T/att 2 Div HQ 3-17 to APM 3 Div HQ 7-17 to APM AIF depots UK 4-18 rtn 3 Div HQ 7-18 prom Maj APM 9-18 2xMID reason not stated F&B to NME UK farming disch 20-1-20 (Boer War Sth African Constabulary) (South Africa Police 9 years) If correct the two lists differ, but when did that happen? Grad list show D Troop in Dec 1914, while Army lists show him as 3 Troop or C Troop dated July 1915, but buy that stage he was well out of it in the UK? Strange, but when you consider the lists are made up before these dates (July 1915) then was he in C Troop, after Dec 1914 to some time in 1915? Then again Neil Campbell shows D Troop in the July 1915 Army lists, so when did he join the Troop? Possibly when Burkett went to hosp, but that was on Anzac, a few days after landing, and Army lists again show him in B Troop? I notice that you or Nev didn't try to put a Officer list in your book, for when they embarked either from Aussie or from Egypt, so it hard to say where they all were. Even the War Diary seems to have missed that also? I see why now, its been a long while since I looked at the 10th ALHR, when I tried to fix this problem with the Regt, but failed I like to confirm things, but I surpose we may never do that. stevenbecker Posted 9 May Share Posted 9 May Just to give you an example I just finished going through the Roll book for A Sqn 1 LHR so when compared to the Regt and Grad list The Regt and Grad list shows White Lt (27-8-14) A Troop Tinson 2/Lt (27-8-14) B Troop MacMillian 2/Lt (27-8-14) C Troop Ryrie 2/Lt (14-9-14) D Troop The A Sqn Roll book White Lt (27-8-14) A Troop Tinson 2/Lt (27-8-14) B Troop MacMillian 2/Lt (27-8-14) C Troop Ryrie 2/Lt (14-9-14) D Troop The odd man out is this bloke RYRIE Oswald Bruce Hon/Capt 01 LHR A Sqn B Troop 10-14 embarked A Sqn D Troop (in Army lists dated 12-14) shown D Troop in unit history shown A Sqn C Troop in war dairy 5-15 shown A Sqn 4 Troop (in Army lists dated 7-15) (shown A Sqn C Troop 8-15) not shown on records in charge from Popes Post (roll book shows to Corps HQ with Pte's Brady & Hall D Troop 4-8-15) replaced by Weir prom T/Capt 7-8-15 possibly att early to ADC to GOC Anzac Corps HQ 9-15 (G) to OC ASqn/1 LHTR 2-17 to ADC to Gen Chaytor Anzac MD HQ 5-17 rtn OC B Sqn 1-18 prom Maj 4-18 MID - for his work at Amman 28-3-18 (Boer War SSM CSqn/NSWIB (314) to Lt and Capt DSqn/5 ACH) brothers Harold Maj 6 LHR died and Edwin (?) By Aug 1915 things had changed a lot, with officers moving around for their change from Popes post I am still not sure what was going on here as all sources differ Any wonder we have the problem with Burkett.
