watchman Posted 22 April , 2005 Share Posted 22 April , 2005 Hi South staffordshire regiment March 10th 1917 "in front line sector immediately south of GENERMONT" March 17th 1917 "The battalian marched to GENERMONT and occupied the dugouts in the old front line" I have located the other areas which the S/S were in during March but cant find any town / village either on maps in 1917 or 2005. Can you tell me where GENERMONT is?? Thanks
bmac Posted 23 April , 2005 Share Posted 23 April , 2005 No such place listed in the Michelin France atlas but this web site mentions it: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/grande.guerre/octobre16.html and places it south of the Somme, probably somewhere near the A1 motorway between Belloy en Santerre and Ablaincourt. This page suggests a location between Belloy en Santerre and Fresnes-Mazancourt: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/chtimiste/regiment...seurs50-150.htm This site has it NE of Ablaincourt: http://www.firstworldwar.com/onthisday/1916_10_14.htm And this site mentions the Sucrerie there as the target of the attack on October 14th 1916: http://www.greatwardifferent.com/Great_War...e_French_01.htm Anyway, though not a precise location, thanks for asking as it has thrown up a whole load of French WW1 websites I never knew about! BTW Genermont seems to be a local Somme family name as well.
Dragon Posted 23 April , 2005 Share Posted 23 April , 2005 It's on my 1916 map as in the L shape of the Somme river, south west of Péronne, west of Fresnes, and Misery, east of Vermandovillers, north east of Ablaincourt and Chaulnes. On a modern map it’s South East of Estrées on the N29. Does this fit? I will post a scan of the 1916 map, followed by a close up. Gwyn
Dragon Posted 23 April , 2005 Share Posted 23 April , 2005 1916 map. Apologies for compromise between download time and compression.
Dragon Posted 23 April , 2005 Share Posted 23 April , 2005 Closer. There is a little smudge on the paper through the place name, which is why it seems unclear.
watchman Posted 23 April , 2005 Author Share Posted 23 April , 2005 Thanks for the help Dragon Your map seems spot on, because later in March " All available strength were engaged in renaking the Berny - Fresnes- Misery road" Which is clearly shown on your map. Any chance you could steer me in the direction of buying or obtaining a copy of the 1914 map you have used as looking at it, it shows other places mentioned in the diaries? Once again thanks. BMAC thanks definatly some interesting sites you have uncovered. Watchman
Dragon Posted 24 April , 2005 Share Posted 24 April , 2005 Any chance you could steer me in the direction of buying or obtaining a copy of the 1914 map you have used <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, no, because it's a genuine old map, one of quite a few that I have. I must've bought it at a second hand shop or fair somwhere. Check French junk shops or marches du puce... I could perhaps scan a part of it. Give me an idea of area. You might strike it lucky at one of these (I did - numerous times!!! ). Ebay is also sometimes a source, but expect to pay over the odds on here. Speedbid, less so. Dave.
