22 April 2024 marks the 106th anniversary of the death of my relative Harry Hackett in WW1. He was from Old Hill in the Black Country, joined up pre WW1 in 1911 and served with the Grenadier Guards both at the Kings Palaces and as part of the BEF throughout the Great War. He wrote tons of letters from the trenches that I (quite by fluke) came across including a remarkable postcard explaining that he’d exchanged addresses with two German Soldiers during the actual Boxing Day Christmas Truce. If it’s of any interest you can read all about this Black Country bloke as there’s a book about him on Amazon just search for Neat Little Rows by Andy Rudall.

RIP Harry (1891-1918).

Thanks, Andy for sharing. Great to hear about Black Countrymen such as Harry. My wife has relatives with the surname Hackett (and I have done a bit of WW1 research on one of them), but I'm pretty sure there isn't a connection. RIP Harry.
