Remembered Today:

Trench Names - Western Front

I have alway been fascinated by the great variety of trench names and battle areas on the Western Front - Coffee  Trench, Folly Trench, Boom Ravine, Sausage and Mash Valley etc etc.

How did they originate and who was likely to assign the names and produce the various signs that were placed on the trench possibly with directions?

I have tried to research using Google and Duck Duck Go but nothing comes up. Interesting subject!

"Rat's Alley; Trench Names of the Western Front, 1914-1918" by Peter Chasseaud is the reference you need.

Have you come across Peter Chasseaud's Rat's Alley? Sounds like the book for you: details are HERE, although Great War Digital and Amazon seem to be suggesting that it is currently out of print.

[Edit: pipped at the post by Regimental Rogue - curses! :) But perhaps my link is useful to show you the book's details.]

Thanks all for your replies.

What seems the ideal source relating to trench names is the ‘Rats Alley’ book which unfortunately, currently is out of stock/print. Hopefully, it will undergo a reprint in the future.  Due to its size of over 700 pages, it is too large to view online or through Kindle.

If it’s out of print, would a second hand copy be available to buy online anywhere?

I’ve got a spare 2006 copy if anyone is interested.

Hi Jay

Although I believe the 2006 copy is the reduced size I would be interested.

Yes, the Gazetteer in the 2017 reprint was greatly extended. My hardback 2006 copy is in good condition with a few pencil annotations and looks to be a steal at £30 plus p&p.
