Mark Hunter Posted 10 April Share Posted 10 April Hi everyone. I wonder if anyone could help me idenifty this object I found in a freshly-ploughed farmers field just above Becourt last week. I was there with my 90-year-old father-in-law tracing the footsteps of his father who was in the Royal Engineers and who was wounded during the battle of the Somme at Becourt. Anyway, as you can see what I found appears to be a double-looped buckle which I assume connected leather belts or straps of some kind on a soldier's unifrom. As it's not made of brass I suspect it was not used in horse saddlry. Size-wise it fills the palm of my hand. It could be a one-off, or perhaps someone recongnises it and knows it provinance. Thank you. Mark
chaz Posted 13 April Share Posted 13 April You have to remember 100 years have passed as have farming tools. It may well be a late horse drawn or early steam shackle from a farm tool.
Mark Hunter Posted 13 April Author Share Posted 13 April Thanks Chaz. Yep. For sure. Could have had a lot of uses. Most likely a buckle or shackle of some kind. I suspect for a harness...but who knows? Thanks for replying.
