The man that I am researching was KIA on the 12th March 1917. The war diaries state:-

'On the 12th Z Coy and Bttn Bombers under Captain Leatham carried out a successful raid on the Brickfields, N. of Beaurains'

[successful ?? --- 56 casualties; 26 killed; 2 missing and 28 wounded]

Can anyone point towards a map that shows the position of the Brickfields?

Is there a map sheet reference in the war diaries?

@Michelle Young -- no mention of a map reference in the diaries. However, the diaries shows that the 6th Battalion were stationed at Baudemont Barracks, Arras then 'On the 12th Z Coy and Bttn Bombers under Captain Leatham carried out a successful raid on the Brickfields, N. of Beaurains' --- the brickfields must have been at the Old Brick Works as shown on the map posted by WhiteStarLine.

@WhiteStarLine -- many thanks for posting the map.

Allan,

If you go to the 43rd Infantry Brigades Diary you will find the planning, reports and maps for this raid. The 14th Division HQ diary in it's intelligence report for that date says that the raid was carried out in area M.4.b.9.1 - M.5.c.1.9 -M.5.a.3.0.-M.5.a.3.4 identifications of the 100th Reserve Grenadier Regiment were obtained from shoulder straps & documents.

Objectives i. to obtain prisoners, identification and German documents ii to kill all Germans that cannot be taken prisoners iii Capture or destroy machine guns, trench mortars and destroy dug-outs.

The raiding party reached all their objectives except trenches in Ziegeleiwee, S.E. of the brick stacks as per Divisional HQ. Diary

Always great advice - if there's no / little detail in the unit war diary, go one level up.  In this case, the Brigade diary.  If this lacks detail, often the intelligence diaries have the summary narrative or positions you want.  Area is supplied by Andy.
