watchman Posted 21 April , 2005 Share Posted 21 April , 2005 Hi As per post before I am still trying to find which company PTE FG Smith was attached to. reading the war diaries I note Nov 30th 1917 "The battalion was bombarded by gas and HE shells............ during these two days the battalion sufferd heavy casualties fromgas, the whole of A C & D coys being casualties" This was qiute a high number because on Dec 31st 1917 entry reads: "13 killed, wounded and gassed 392, missing 15" "Reinforcements arrived 450 O.R arrived from depot battalion" PTE FG Smith never mentioned any gasing or effects, therefore by elimination FG Smith must have been in B company??? Does my logic work?? or is it a tenuous link??
Robert Dunlop Posted 22 April , 2005 Share Posted 22 April , 2005 It works provided the war diary is completely correct and Private Smith had not forgotten or suppressed the incident. I should have thought it was worth going with your deduction until/unless anything more substantial comes along. I have seen stronger links made on weaker evidence . Nice piece of detective work.
