NZ Soldiers' records

2 pieces of news;

1)The NZ War Census CD has been replaced by the NZ War Census version 2 CD, which now contains extra names, including my 3rd fiji Contingent which joined the NZEF, and the NZers who enlisted in Britain. It is available from the NZSG

http://www.genealogy.org.nz/index.html

although for some reason the site does not mention it. It costs NZ$40 plus $5 overseas postage; or the old one can be returned and pay $15.

Email NZSG if you are interested.

2)The World War 1 and earlier personnel files at Miltary Archives are being sent to Archives NZ, as of now

I don't know quite what the arrangements will be about getting copies of files

Hi,

I ordered a NZ service file on 1st Apr and it arrived exactly three weeks later. Pretty efficient service. I think I read somewhere that the files are being transferred in batches alphabetically, so it may take longer if you happen to be unlucky with the timing if your request.

Having had the priviledge of being able to wander through the base records at Trentham not so long ago, I can tell you that the staff are not entirely in agreement with the records being moved to NZ Archives. I cannot see how they will be able to care for them in any better manner than the base records could, in fact I would perceve this to be a retrograde step back as it will now be harder to access any files.

I had minor dealings with archives last year attempting to extract historical data, they made it quite clear that it would cost, but refused to commit to a ball park figure. Their lack of commitment to some kind of figure caused the project to be shelved.

In conversation with a nice chap there, he informed me that the different establishments that deals with archives tend to 'hoard' them and regard them as their own. There is no major information sharing between the different establishments. The whole thing reminds me of medieval churches importing relics in order to drum up a bit of money from devout pilgrims.

This web site has some more info.

In the mean time the staff at base archives have done some magnificent work in providing information to family and researchers. It will be a shame to loose the link.
