Down Man Posted 22 March Share Posted 22 March Hi all! I've been researching an ancestor by name of Michael John Monaghan from Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland. He did live on Spencer Street. I've found these records although the numbers differ a bit, but am I right in thinking this is the same person? I'm not sure how to read this information, so some pointers would be appreciated. Definitely can't understand the theatres of war bit written in red ink! Thanks in advance all!
Admin Michelle Young Posted 23 March Admin Share Posted 23 March The bottom medal roll is for a man in the Royal Irish Rifles. The other documents are for a man in the Royal Irish Fusiliers.
corisande Posted 23 March Share Posted 23 March The Royal Irish Rifles man died 1918 Name Michael Monaghan Death Date16 Apr 1918 Death Place France Rank Private Regiment Royal Irish Rifles Regimental Number 20922
corisande Posted 23 March Share Posted 23 March There were 2 Michael Monaghan living at Spencer St, Hollywood in 1911 census (Irish GRO)- father and son The father appears to have joined R Irish Fusiliers Militia in 1886 - click . But I can find no record of him enlisting in WW1 If that were to be his PIA for #12952, then there should be a MIC as he had a GSW. (Faint chance he got it in UK, and never went abroad) So it is inconclusive where father and son were in the same Regiment in WW1. I suppose, in the lack of any other evidence, I would think the 12952 is a typo for 20952

So, the father lived longer than his son! Michael Monaghan born 1866 died 1952. Michael John Monaghan born 1893 died 1966.
