Remembered Today:

Scottish versus Canadian Royal Highlanders Black Watch

I'm trying to understand if the Royal Highlanders Black Watch was comprised of men from both Scotland and Canada, or are they 2 separate regiments. My grandfather and his brothers from Auchterrarder in Perth all served in WW1, with one of them in the 13th Black Watch Regiment. The postings are confusing. Have photos of all and willing to share but want them linked to the right searches. Can anyone help clarify?

Welcome to the GWF

They are two completely different regiments in different armies, the British Army and the Canadian Army, though no doubt many expats enlisted in the latter.

For information on the Black Watch and researching British soldiers see the Long Long Trail link top left

The Black Watch of Canada formed three battalions the served in France with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. These were the 13th, 42nd and 73rd battalions. All of the service records have been digitized and are available on the Library and Archives Canada web site.

All the best,

Gary
