USN Posted 14 March Share Posted 14 March I acquired this uniform some time ago and have been slowly restoring/ researching it since. It is the dress uniform of acting colonel John H. Ridgway of the North Staffordshire Regiment. He started his career as a volunteer of the south Staffordshire militaria and eventually transferred to the North Staffordshire Regiment just before ww1, he received the DSO twice and was KIA at the battle of scarpe while being temporarily attached to the York and Lancaster regiment. If anyone has any further information, items or comments pertaining to Colonel ridgway I would love to hear about it. Many Thanks, USN
FROGSMILE Posted 14 March Share Posted 14 March (edited) I’m afraid that although the jacket appears genuine it has fallen into disrepair and someone has botched the original gold laced collar and cuffs very badly with some poor quality lace and braid of indifferent type. The enclosed images show how the lace decoration should appear when correct. The collar lace should be of Rose pattern and the Austrian cuff knot of Russia braid. Yes I know, its on my long list of things to fix on this tunic, if I just hadn't planned on removing the current lace until I can find suitable repair material. This is one of the better sources over the pond: https://militaryheritage.com/militarybraid.htm. You will need a specialist to get any renovation right. Good luck. USN Posted 14 March Author Share Posted 14 March Just now, FROGSMILE said: This is one of the better sources over the pond: https://militaryheritage.com/militarybraid.htm I'll keep that in mind, I do typically try to keep all of my restorations as original as possible though. I find that it's nearly impossible for modern manufacturers to match original period patina and quality.

Yes I suppose you could take lace from a tunic in even worse condition, but I don’t know how easy to find or likely that will be.

It is very unlikely haha that or I hold out for some occasional NOS stuff that pops up. I am a stickler when it comes to restoration work on my collection. You will be extraordinarily fortunate to find old stocks of Rose pattern lace, but Russia lace is more common.

Every once in a while you get lucky with something but we'll just have to see how long that takes, if it ever happens

USN
I don't suppose anyone has seen or knows of the location of any of Mr. Ridgways medals do they? Maybe they've popped up an online auction at some point or they're tucked away in a collection?
