Remembered Today:

Composition of ASC horse transport company

Good evening,

I'm new here, so please go easy on me.

I'm trying to find out about the composition of a typical ASC horse transport company. The LLT gives info on headcount, but I'd love to know details like whether the company was divided into sections and if so how many NCOs were in each section and how many horses, carts and wagons were allocated to each section, for example. Would there also have been men in specialist roles, such as farriers, veterinary/forage men, wheelwrights etc?

I've tried consulting a couple of divisional train war diaries (picked at random). These are great for details on billets and movements but don't give much info beyond that.

Any info greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance,

How about trying Army Service Corps, 1902-1918 by Michael Young?

There is an excellent factsheet booklet by Ron Clifton on ASC Companies which can be downloaded from the Western Front Association if you are a member; this goes into more details as to how companies were structured.

Do you know which ASC company is involved? It also depends on what sort of horse transport company you are looking at; there were differences between the four ASC HT companies in the divisional train. The first company was the HQ company which supported the division and was slightly different in structure. There were also various types of reserve companies at the base and at Corp and Army level as well as pack and mule companies.

Thank you very much, both. I wasn't aware of either the book or the factsheet so I will consult these. Cheers and have a good evening.
