grantowi Posted 12 March Share Posted 12 March I have one of my Naval guys listed as serving at "Wormwood Scrubs PUM" on his record. I know about the RNAS, Airships / balloons and Wormwood Scrubs, but the PUM bit has stumped both me and google. Anyone got any ideas ? Admin DavidOwen Posted 12 March Admin Share Posted 12 March Well could it be POM? - Petty Officer Mechanic? Otherwise my goto list only has PU as Permanently Unfit
horatio2 Posted 12 March Share Posted 12 March (edited) @grantowiAn image is often more helpful than a description lacking context other than "on his record". Edited 12 March by horatio2

In pre war, Herbert Stanley Hodges was a carpenter and joiner, he enlisted on 3/5/16 in Swindon (?) as 213618 aged 30. I would love to have images, but I have to use the local library's computers that don't allow you to save images and printing them out is too costly
horatio2 Posted 12 March Share Posted 12 March Here he is - a free download from TNA - https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6811792 The entry is a badly-written POM - Petty Officer Mechanic as previously suggested. He was advanced to POM from Leading Mechanic (LM) on 1 Nov 1917.

Horatio, many thanks for both of those. I'm guessing that he would have been playing with the balloons as he was at Wormwood from May 1917 to March 1918 when he was RAF
horatio2 Posted 12 March Share Posted 12 March His RNAS trade was Airship Rigger, which he carried forward to the RAF as a Sergeant Mechanic. https://www.rafmuseumstoryvault.org.uk/archive/hodges-h.s
