Bob Coulson Posted 20 April , 2005 Share Posted 20 April , 2005 Part of the CWGC info states, "lost at sea or died at home but whose bodies could not be recovered for burial" I have a local memorial man who died at home and is commemorated on the memorial but what puzzles me is those dying at home whose bodies could not be buried. Would be grateful for any examples of this to help my understanding. Bob.
Terry Denham Posted 20 April , 2005 Share Posted 20 April , 2005 Bob It does not say 'who could not be buried' but 'could not be recovered for burial' - subtle difference. There were a number of men who drowned in estuaries/coastal waters whose bodies were not recovered. There were possibly also some in mountain situations where recovery was not possible (there certainly were in WW2). Also there would have been a few occasions where there was nothing left to bury (explosion/fire).
Bob Coulson Posted 20 April , 2005 Author Share Posted 20 April , 2005 Terry, Thanks for the explanation I was just finding it a bit strange to understand these circumstances, what you have said makes it clearer in my mind the possibilities for this sort of entry.
