Remembered Today:

For service in land operations

Hello all,

Is there any way to tell what the service in land operations relates to? It looks like 300 NP11924/18 with something then in brackets,

It can often be deduced from the list of ships. In this case, it could be his draft onto the books of HMS ATTENTIVE, the Dover Base. ATTENTIVE's ledgers also carried the men who were drafted to the RN Siege Guns in France and Belgium.

That said, I must confess to never having seen the published purpose and justification of that "Shore Operations" stamp. The NP reference shows it originated in the Naval Personnel Division of the Admiralty so drafting must be the underlying purpose.

I have the following comment from another forum participant squirrelled away in my notes

These papers have been discussed [on the Great War Forum] & the consensus is that they no longer exist.

The following two ratings served with the RN Siege Guns, and "elsewhere" too. In this regard, it should be documented on their statement of service.

J13410 Able Seaman Maurice De Sousa Barry
J13080 Able Seaman Reginald John Tarr

Maybe they have a similar reference on their statements of service?
