I am transcribing the medal roll for Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve at https://jutlandcrewlists.wikitide.org/wiki/Newfoundland_Royal_Naval_Reserve

and have some queries on abbreviations used in the 5 column (how disposed of).

Could anyone provide details of what H.C. Newf'ld, or WW or F means please. I think that FR means father.

Thank you

Missing from the Kew Appendix 2 link provided :  H.C. Newf'ld = medals issued to Newfoundland High Commission[er] (in London).

I.C.1000/1914 (etc.): this entry is always applicable to a deceased rating. It refers to the 'Index Casualty' number in the Naval Records for Wills and allowed reference to the Legatee named in the rating's Will. The Index Casualty itself  has not survived, I believe.

@penfold

Are you aware that the records of (only) four Newfoundland RNR ratings are to be found at TNA under BT 377 ?

Samuel MABIE  DN.3    Nicholas John HOLLOWAY  DN.2    Elias ANDERSON  DN.1     and Matthew HEARN  TN.1

their records can be downloaded (sign in for free) here:-

Yes, most of them are held in Newfoundland but no one there seems to know how the service records can be accessed on line

Are those members of the Newfoundland RNR, or members of the (UK) RNR who just happen to have been born in Newfoundland?

I thought the service number of all members of the Newfoundland RNR ended with an "X"?

Cheers,

Glen,

The four with records held at Kew were all transfers from the Newfoundland Regiment at the very tail-end of the war.
