MartinWills Posted 1 May , 2005 Share Posted 1 May , 2005 Bob, They were involved in the battle of Mughar. 3 Officers killed Capt & Adjt J M Watson 2/Lt L D Robertson 2/Lt J Wood Capt A P Nimmo died of wounds shortly after at El Arish 9 Officers wounded Major R W SHarpe Capt A Fairgrieve Cpat J S Allan Lt G D Sempill 2/Lt R Bell 2/Lt A W Harvie 2/Lt B D Leslie 2/LtH M Ross 2/Lt R Graham ORs 30 killed 1 missing 138 wounded Total Casualties 182 A company on the right and D company on the left under Capt's Fairgrieve and Allan respectiuvely led the initial attack around 1000 with B & C coy's in suppport. On the high ground 2500 yds soutn of Yebnah hey changed in to extended lines of platoons coming under fire from Turkish machine guns at 1030 and were the target of much HE and shrapnel reaching within 400 yards of the village and taking up positions in Wadi Jamus; Wadi Shellel el Ghor near an old well and behind Khurbet Ridge. They were reinforced by 5th KOSBs and in desperate need of every man the 4th & 5th KOSBs HQ staff joined them in the front line. At 1545 they advanced again in rushes led by Col tandy whilst the 6th Mounted Brigade (mainly Dorset & Somerset Yeomanry) charged on the left flank through heavy machine gun fire reaching the high ground to the north of the village. Brig. Gen Pollok-McCall being well to the fore with rifle and bayonet. The village was consolidated by 1645 with the enemy in full retreat. Notable contributions were made by L/Cpl A. Ramsay; Capt. Laing; RSM Murray; Sgt Craig; Capt Nimmo; Lt.s Burns, Ross, Wilson & Wood. This is a brief summary of a couple of accounts of the action. Hope it helps.
