Remembered Today:

Trooper 1169 Thomas Mcnair Harvey 7 L.H.R.

I am just starting to research a little of the history of my Great great Uncle - Trooper Thomas McNair (or MacNair) Harvey, No 1169 of the 7th L.H.R who was killed in action on 16th May 1917 at El Magam by a “bullet left breast”. While I have tracked down the basic NAA records held on his enlistment & service, I have yet to find out much on his activities & deployments through his 2 years in service, or the particular engagement which led to his death. I stumbled across your thread, and while your research covers a period a few months after his death, I would be most grateful for any pointers you might have towards more detail on the 7th L.H.R.’s history at this time and any useful sources of further information. In the records for him, mention is made of “Hill 280” wadi Imleh, so any maps of the area from the time would also be interesting to me. It would be nice to piece together a fuller picture to add to the family records to pass to future generations, along with the “death penny” and other effects & photographs in my possession from him.

My thanks for any support that may be forthcoming.

C.F.

Further to another quick browse on this excellent site, I have found my way to the War diaries for the 7th L.H.R., extracts of which start to shed light on the engagement which led to his death:CA59B482-75D9-411E-905E-6E4FC23F6EAF-1174-0000027F8CB04AF1.png.ac6a8875ad3e3ccbf49f05bb80c9d58d.pngBDD150F4-0905-4C7E-88F3-E5F6BFEC56D3-1174-0000027DCEAFEB02.png.d0cf55050fbc659989b6210343787d56.pngFA57FB1F-9EBA-466A-B030-D24F1DDEF3F1-1174-000002821D2DF685.png.8b3f92de9f9059cb43a05fde132b1b8d.png

So it looks like this was most likely the specific action in which he and one other were killed. I think I came across the name of another 7th Trooper buried with him in Gaza and killed on the same day - I will recheck the records and see if I can place them together.

Can anyone shed further light on what is meant when referring to a “screen”? Is this some sort of forward recce they are referring to?

Any further detail, maps, photos etc of the area or anything else of interest would be most welcomed!

Certainly the references to Wadi Imleh & El Magam tie up.

Can anyone shed light on the referenced “Field Return B213” - are these forms archived or accessible in any way? It is not something I have come across before.

I also see the abbreviation “do” a lot: can anyone advise on what it stands for?

PS,

The History of the 7th Light Horse Regt 1914-19 by LtCol Richardson

It details pretty much the service of the Regt and Tom's part in the story

As to the others details, photos and such, you could contact the AWM (Australian War Memorial) in Canberra for any info they have on him

Perfect - thanks, Steven. I will search out a copy of the book you suggest.

Out of interest, how would I go about finding out when/where the troop ship on which he embarked docked? In slower time, I will try and piece together where all he served from when he arrived in the Middle East.

It is a defensive reconnaissance. Whilst one hesitates to give wiki as a source it is explained in detail

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screening_(tactical)

The Light Horse were mounted infantry and had honed their tactics in the Boer War. It was considered a basic role of the Light Horse, which is probably why no explanation needed in the diary.

Do is a diminution of "Ditto" or "the same as stated above"

Mate,

From what I understand this reinf like a few others around that time were quickly pack up and sent to Gallipoli,

But on arrival at Murdos they were attached to the Advance Base there and remained until the evacuation on and rtn to Egypt joining the Regt there.

Problem come when not all these men from that Reinf were sent, other remained in Egypt, so there dates for joining the Regt very from Dec 1915 to Jan 1916

The ships (I believed) docked at Suez, and men were sent to a holding unit in Egypt until the higher up decided what they wanted to do with them.

The 8R arrived about the end of Aug early Sept and would have been sent to the OS Base depot in Cairo

I afraid the records are unclear here, and only a check of someone who wrote a diary would confirm that (check the AWM for such)

Sorry it not much here to confirm until he arrived at his Regt in Jan 1916

It should look like this

to OS Base 9-15 to Adv base Murdos 12-15 tos C Sqn 1-16

He shows returned to Regt in Jan 1916, but others show once the Regt was evac from Gallipoli 20 Dec 1915, many joined the Regt on Mudros, but its unclear if they did?

Thats why the confussion about Tos (taken of strength) dates?

Sorry if this has confussed you

PS,

just to give you some idea of what was happening here, these men are from his Reinf and they differ

The Regt arrived back in Egypt 25 Dec 1915 and railed to Cairo first Heliopolis, the Maadi by the 28 Dec.

Mate,

I was rechecking my facts here and found what I was after in this mans service record.

RALPH    Bertie Leslie    1154    Pte    7 LHR    8R to OS Base 9-15 Tos A Sqn 12-15 to S/Sgt Orderly Room RHQ (from norman) 7-16 to Records Sect AIF HQ Cairo 7-16 to ER Wo1 5-19 MID - reason not stated RTA on duty (unit not stated possibly HCo/41 IR (Blue Mountains) CMF 3 years) brother Percy Lt MM 53Bn KIA

The ship appears to have docked at Suez 1 Sept 1915

And the men moved into camp

While he joined the Regt 28 Dec 1915

I did read other accounts that mention arrival in Aug (late), while that's possible, I have yet to confirm the date, other then confirmed in Bertie's records.

I could list all the men in the 8R 7 LHR, if you like to compare them?

Hi Steven, many thanks for this further detail - it all helps! I think piecing together this first few weeks/months from disembarking will be the trickier bit, so anything you do come across is appreciated. I am still getting to grips with the abbreviations & acronyms, but starting to get used to it. If you did have access to the names of the men in 8R 7LHR, that would be great - it may shed light on how they were all deployed in the first few weeks/months. Given that Tom was an experienced & capable horseman, he will probably have been kept around them, but then again common sense was not always the name of the game in deployments - my grandfather spent the first part of WW2 training men in mountain warfare, only to be deployed to 3ft below sea level in Holland. Go figure!

Regarding the various troop ship movements: are records on these held anywhere, and do you know what level of detail there was of those on board any given “leg”?

Starting to piece a little more around Tom’s death, having come across this map. I will see what other diaries may exist charting the push northwards towards Gaza, and will try and get hold of a copy of the 7th’s history by LtCol Richardson. It seems a fairly “kinetic” period, especially for the horsemen given the nature of the terrain, though rather brutal for men & horses alike with the climate.

Anyway, thank you again for all the assistance!

Mate,

Travel was always a problem in most of Australia during these years.

Most had to come to the cities from the country, and most of the men (if not all) came from a fair distance (see Address and NOK's)

Many men were on Cooee marches, which traveled by foot from country town, to town, picking up men as they went.

You may need to check a diary for these men to see how they traveled.

As to Ship movements, I only know the ships, again you may need to cross check for a Log book of the ship (HMTS Suffolk) for any details there.

As for his death, around that time, we (ALH) was always after pushing the Turks, and we under took many operations to keep them on there toes

At times we got into trouble, but always to push or engage the Turks.

At that stage of the war we crossed the wadi a number of times, later in the year we pushed out to the East. but during May we tended to keep a patrol and outpost line along the Wadi and rotated Troops and Sqn's through there. Each Bde and Regt taking there turns, even my Camel Corps units set up there acting as a trip line

I hope that gives you some back ground here.
