  • BarbaraG changed the title to Canadian Cavalry L/Cpl 118082 to Royal Irish Rifles 2nd Lt. Frederick Michael Masterman????

I found a L/Cpl , 118082, Frederick Mechel Masterman, of the Fort Garry Horse,  Canadian Cavalry

They recruited in the area including Pincher Creek

I think the above person is the same man

In your links above for the attestation papers he is shown as enlisting at at Pincher Creek:thumbsup:

That birth year should be 1884, rather than 1883, this is his birth registration in the last quarter of 1884 in Marylebone, which is consistent with his mother's address of Hyde Park.

MASTERMAN, FREDERICK  MICHEL  Mother's maiden name: CLARKE

GRO Reference: 1884  D Quarter in MARYLEBONE  Volume 01A  Page 550

In the 1891 England and Wales census he is a 6-year old scholar in Tormohun, Devon (now effectively an area in Torquay), while in the 1901 census he is a 16-year old boarder in Winchester St Michael, Winchester, Hampshire, so presumably attending Winchester College.

1891 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:WCJH-H2M

1901 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XSXB-714

By 1906 he appears in the Canada, Northwest Provinces Census so he had to have immigrated to Canada sometime in the intervening five years.

I'm not having any joy in finding him in the 1911 Canada census which would help nail down the exact year that he immigrated. The following would appear to be him returning to Canada on a subsequent trip in March 1907.

Wow. Thank you all so much for your help. I was hoping to clarify his '.... on appointment to a commission in the New Army'.

@johnmelling1979 Thank you. Pincher Creek confirms link as his name appears on a War Memorial now in The Heritage Park in Calgary https://heritagepark.ca/venues/st-martins-church/

Looking through photographs I found one of the Memorial, sadly not very clear from our trip in 2012 (!!!).

Interested to find all those mentioned but think I'll add as separate threads if further information might be found

@Allan1892 Indeed it is good to see the image, thank you.

@Tawhiri having had a great uncle who served with the CEF I'm always interested with the links back in UK, thank you.
