He served as a Deck Hand in the Royal Naval Reserve from 5 June 1916. On 22 June 1916 he was drafted to serve in the hired Admiralty drifter CHRISTINA MAYES:  , hired drifter, Adty No 2265. Built 1908, 82grt, Methil-reg ML.123. In service 2.15-1919 as net vessel, boom defence vessel. He served in her until 31 August 1917 and then was transferred to another drifter MARYLAND:  hired drifter. Built 1902, 61grt, Lowestoft-reg LT.506. In service 1.15-1920 as stores & water carrier.

Both of these drifters were based on HMS THETIS, an old cruiser used as a depot ship at Lough Larne. On 5 January 1918 THETIS was relieved by HMS VOGOROUS. a drifter and he was then transferred to VIGOROUS, remaining with her until demob in 1919.

He qualified for the British War and Victory Medals but never claimed them so they were never issued

Thank you for the help

I was struggling to read the writing earlier

He was on ships pre WW1 and upto the late 1920s as a Waiter, etc

Got a few pictures of things from when he was on cruise ships  like RMS Franconia in the late 20s

Must have liked being at sea!

So finding this Navy record has  been a surprise and will help fill in the gaps

Sure there is more to find...

John
