Bob Norman Posted 26 February Share Posted 26 February Hello, I wonder if anyone of the knowledgeable individuals on this amazing site can help me with the questions relating to a Great War Medal purchase. The group consists of a trio comprising of ;1914-15 Star,British War Medal and Victory Medal to 14740 Pte William John White Ryl.Innis.Fus I have copies of his medal index card which confirms entitlement, entering France 5-10-15 and award of “War Badge” for which I have the roll as confirmation but unfortunately no badge. He was discharged ”Sick” 16 Feb 1918,Awarded Silver War badge 319048. He enlisted in the 11th (Service) Bn on 23rd September recruited from Donegal and Fermanagh. Question Due to his age on enlistment 50, would it be likely that he had previous service? Am I correct in thinking that following the introduction of a new form of “Short Service” in August 1914,men with previous service in the Army were accepted up to the age of 45. I believe that there are many recorded instances of overage men having been accepted into the service. Was it not necessary to produce evidence of age or even of one’s name in order to enlist? I have a copy of the Census Of Ireland,1911 for Donegal which states that; He is an agricultural labourer aged 47 and the household consist of wife and seven children and he is the only member of the household, with the exception of the infant unable to read. He has a son John J White aged 16 so it is possible that he would have seen service in The Great War? If the attestation papers are available for William then it should give information of previous service?. I have the medal roll for the I.G.S 1895 and he doesn’t appear in that.; maybe Boer War Service? Any help much appreciated. As you said, he enlisted on 23 September 1914 aged around 50 - SWB record (Ancestry): Given the number of children born I would doubt he had previous overseas service (1911): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002100719/ However, he was not at home at the 1901 census (dau violet b. 1900): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000676309/ Violet's BC shows that he was a 'Gunner in the Donegal Artillery' on 6th June 1900 (irishgenealogy.ie): At the birth of his next dau. Matilda on 25 March 1903 he was a 'labourer'. His son John James was born 9 Oct 1894, father 'labourer'.
