stuart rowles Posted 25 February Share Posted 25 February John Rowles was born in Bridgwater in 1863 and died there in 1942 age 79. For his war service he was awarded a Mercantile Marine WW1 pair. Two of the vessels he served on were the "Industry" and the "Marian" (No. 77403) presumably out of Bridgwater. Can anyone provide a photo of either or both of these vessels. Any help would be much appreciated.
MerchantOldSalt Posted 25 February Share Posted 25 February Here is the schooner INDUSTRY of Bridgewater Off.No.60577 John Rowles was her Master in 1915. The schooner MARIAN of Padstow is proving a bit more elusive. Tony
MerchantOldSalt Posted 25 February Share Posted 25 February Best I can do at the moment for MARIAN, expect you have found this painting from an advert for its sale on line. She does appear in several online websites particularly about her sinking in 1925. Tony
seaJane Posted 25 February Share Posted 25 February Might be worth contacting the National Maritime Museum Cornwall at Falmouth, whose Bartlett library holds a fair amount of local material. https://nmmc.co.uk/explore/bartlett-library-2/
stuart rowles Posted 26 February Author Share Posted 26 February Thanks Tony, that's wonderful. No, I had not come across the Marian picture when sold. Fantastic and many thanks, Will try the National Maritime Museum Cornwall also to see if they hold a picture. STUART
stuart rowles Posted 19 March Author Share Posted 19 March I tried the National Maritime Museum but they couldn't even bother to reply. A sign of the times I guess. STUART
