PickledUnicorn Posted 23 February Share Posted 23 February I'm doing a college project on auxiliary hospitals in the North East Of Scotland, mainly stately homes which were turned into them, however, information has been hard to find as a lot of the places that were used are now private estates. I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out.
mtaylor Posted 23 February Share Posted 23 February The local Red Cross branch may well have published annual reports which around here (Perth) are reported in the local press. Some list the current hospitals that are operational if I remember correctly.
rolt968 Posted 23 February Share Posted 23 February (edited) Two things: It would be useful to know what you mean by the North East Scotland. To me it means roughly the old counties of Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, Morayshire and Kincardineshire. Is that the general area you are researching? Ir is worth looking at the back issues of the local newspapers, although I'm not sure how much they will give you about auxilliary hospitals in country houses, but I have run across articles about auxilliary hospitals which were in buildings like church halls (even in one case a poor house) in small towns. With luck you will find reports about donations and fund raising events. For the country house auxilliary hospitals what about looking in the back issues of "county" magazines like Scottish Field and Country Life (?)? I ran across some articles a while ago in one of those about what the country houses were doing for the war effort. seaJane Posted 23 February Share Posted 23 February You might try, also, contacting the National Trust for Scotland, who will almost certainly have flagged up any hospital status of their properties during the centenary commemorations. seaJane
