UB-10, attack on the SS Rosalie

By chance would anyone have any information on the attack on the SS Rosalie from the perspective of the U Boat (UB-10). Date, 10/08/1915.

Hi Paul,

here is the Steinbrinck's report regarding the sinking of SS ROSALIE.

 

UB 10 (Oblt.z.S. Steinbrinck)

10. VIII. 1915, 5 h 40 m Nm., Sichtigkeit 1.000 m

W. Sheringham Tonne Bb. querab

 

6 h 10 m Nm., Wind SO 2, Seegang SO 2

Im Dampferweg Anläufe gefahren. Bei der Unsichtigkeit tauchen die Dampfer so plötzlich auf, daß 2 Angriffe nicht zum Schuß führten.

 

7 h 1 m Nm.

Schuß auf etwa 4.000 ts großen, leeren Dampfer mit englischer Flagge. Laufzeit 38’’. Treffer mittschiffs. Besatzung verließ in 2 Rettungsbooten das Schiff, das Achterkante Schornstein starken Rauch entwickelte. Der Dampfer hatte an der Bordwand vor und hinter der Brücke 2 rechteckige rotgemalte Flächen, von der Größe, wie Norweger und Dänen ihre Neutralitätsabzeichen tragen. Zu Anfang hatte ich den Dampfer daher für einen Neutralen gehalten, bis ich beim Näherkommen die englische Flagge erkannte und beobachten konnte, wie an der vorderen Fläche ein Mann anscheinend auf einer Stelling saß und vermutlich gerade die letzten Neutralitätsspuren verwischte, als der Torpedo traf.

 

7 h 30 m Nm.

Aus SW kommen 4 Fischdampfer und 2 Netzfischer, aus W zwei Engländer und ein großer Holländer heran und bleiben in der Nähe des sinkenden Dampfers. 3 Fischdampfer gehen anscheinend längsseit, ein Engländer kommt von achtern heran; alle liegen gestoppt. 1 Netzfischer und ein Fischdampfer beginnen mit Minensuchen. Auf gestoppt liegenden Engländer Angriff gefahren. Entfernung 800 m; Verringerung nicht möglich, da ein Netzfischer und ein Fischdampfer nur 250 m ab. Torpedo muß zwischen diesen beiden durch gehen.

 

7 h 48 m Nm.

Schuß. Keine Wirkung beobachtet. Hart abgedreht und Kurs auf die W. Sheringham Tonne. H.F.

 

8 h 2 m Nm., diesig, Regen

Holländer und 1 Fischdampfer auf NW Kurs. Vom angeschossenen Dampfer nichts mehr zu sehen.

 

8 h 30 m Nm., glatte See, mäßig sichtig

W. Sheringham Tonne passiert.

 

9 h 20 m Nm.

Ausgeblasen. Mit Ölmaschine Rückmarsch angetreten. Zweimal Fahrzeugen ausgewichen.

For benefit of Forum Pals who don’t know any German, here’s a quick translation of above narrative…

“Fired at an empty steamer of about 4,000 tons with an English flag. Running time 38''. Hit amidships. The crew left the ship in 2 lifeboats, and the aft edge of the funnel produced heavy smoke. The steamer had two rectangular red-painted areas on the side in front of and behind the bridge, the same size as Norwegians and Danes wear their neutrality badges. At first therefore, I thought the steamer was neutral until, as I got closer, I recognized the English flag and saw a man sitting on a bosun’s chair hanging from the bridge wing, probably just erasing the last traces of neutrality when the torpedo hit.

4 trawlers and 2 drifters arrive from the South-West, and two English ships and a large Dutchman from the West close the sinking steamer. Three of the trawlers appear to be going alongside, and one of the English ships is approaching from aft; everyone lies stopped. 1 of the drifters and a trawler begin minesweeping. Attacked stationary Englishman, distance 800 m; not possible to get closer as a drifter and a trawler are only 250 m away. Torpedo has to pass between these two.

Fired. No effect observed. Turned hard and headed for the West Sheringham buoy. H.F.

Dutchman and 1 trawler (resume) North-West course. No longer any sign of the damaged steamer”.
