Crofters11 Posted 22 February Share Posted 22 February Hi I have found a Chelsea Pensioner's record relating to my grandfather. It states name, age, birthplace with the following information: Military Service: Vol Service COY Branch: The Queens Event Type: Pension Event Place: United Kingdom It also has Box Number/Document Type/Person Number/Series Name/ Number of Images. Can anyone please tell me how I can find out any more about his military service for which this pension was given. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Keith_history_buff Posted 22 February Share Posted 22 February The administrative organisation Royal Hospital Chelsea administered the assistance provided to: in-Pensioners, the men who lived in the RHC building out-Pensioners, any man in receipt of a pension payment from RHC In order to do their admin, they kept copies of army service records. There are two sets in particular: soldiers of the Regular army (WO 97 records) soldiers who enlisted in the Militia (WO 96 records) If you subscribe to Fold3, you can access the record. If you subscribe to FindMyPast, you can access the record. If you are not a subscriber, your nearest Library or Local History Centre may have access. As I understand it, this would document his Boer War service. Do you know if the family member reenlisted in WW1 as well?
Keith_history_buff Posted 22 February Share Posted 22 February Only a few of the soldiers, with surviving service records, will be in-Pensioners, who wore tricorne hats and red tunics, whilst they lived at Royal Hospital Chelsea. The majority of these records will relate to those men in receipt of a pension, who did not reside at RHC.
