Tand56 Posted 22 February Share Posted 22 February I would appreciate if any member could verify whether this cap and badge is genuine! I have tried researching the WD stamp marking but have not had any success. Any help would be much appreciated.
Buffnut453 Posted 22 February Share Posted 22 February Theres a Pte H. Taylor, Regt No 10845 who served with the 18th Manchesters (16 Plt, D Coy). I can't find any connection to the RFC.
Tand56 Posted 22 February Author Share Posted 22 February Thank you so much for that information. Do you think the badge is genuine anyway?
Buffnut453 Posted 22 February Share Posted 22 February I don't know. However, the buttons on the front of the cap are definitely not RFC.
Tand56 Posted 22 February Author Share Posted 22 February Ahh! OK thanks for your help, I have found out that the 51 over the WD arrow dates it to the Great War. If I can verify the badge, it may be a long shot that he transferred to RFC! In any case, thank you for your help.

RFC commissioned officers wore regimental buttons, other ranks (enlisted men) wore the general service buttons like the majority of the army that they were a part of. I’m sure there would’ve been individual exceptions (soldiers love testing the system), but those were the general requirements. You can discern the GS buttons on the enclosed image. Standard jackets and forage caps were issued in addition to the maternity type jacket and the field service cap. Some good overall shots of the exterior (front and back) of the side cap would also help but everything looks good even without seeing those so far.
