I have a chance of a few days in Derbyshire ... Buxton / Matlock / Ashbourne area. Not a place I know terribly well. What should I seek out if looking for things of Great War interest?

The Notts and Derbyshire memorial at Crich, near the Tram museum. The memorials to George Marsden Smedley around Lea Green near Matlock. The Buxton War memorial and the Vera Brittain memorial in the Pavilion Gardens, and her house in The Park.

The ex-Trench Mortar proof range south of Harpur Hill - the modern HSE Science and Research Centre is on the northern boundary of what was called The Frith Artillery Range. Most, if not all, of the mortars supplied by the trade from August 1916 were sent for proof here before being accepted into the Service.

and when you need some refreshment, the Church Inn at Chelmorton has an excellent choice of beers and good food, reasonably priced!
