davidbohl Posted 13 February Share Posted 13 February (edited) Not easy this one but worth a try, a family tree have attached this photo to James Page Thomas, born Cardiff 1888, who is casualty L/Cpl 16402 James Page Thomas KLR CWGC I'm not totally convinced it't the prancing horse, perhaps the Liver bird? thanks Dave Edited 13 February by davidbohl

Cardiff’s Maindy Barracks was that regiment’s depot and headquarters. Afternote: after careful scrutiny I’d happily wager upon that ID. Although the image is poor the light and shadow effects in and around the badge clearly reveal the PoW feathers and regimental title scroll. AOK4 Posted 13 February Share Posted 13 February I thinkt it may be a Liverpool Pals badge.
davidbohl Posted 13 February Author Share Posted 13 February He did attest in Liverpool whilst living over the water (he signed his name John, his brother) From Anc.

I’m pretty positive it’s not the badge being worn by the man in the photo. If it’s definitely him, and not some other man, then at some point during his service I’m confident that he was with the Welsh Regiment. He’s wearing the stripe of a Lance corporals appointment. It must’ve been cold at the time of the photo being taken, he’s wearing gloves and scarf, as well as greatcoat. His home town chimes with that regiment’s badge too. The photo could be prewar, as an auxiliary Territorial or SR, or later in the war having served first with the Liverpool’s. davidbohl Posted 13 February Author Share Posted 13 February I think the family are mistaken as his attestation states no previous service.

Yes I think they must be mistaken, I have no doubts about the badge and would say if I did. However, might he have been wounded and after recovery joined the Welsh? What does his medal roll entry say if his name is known? Edited 13 February by FROGSMILE

It must be a different man to whom the family believed then, given that he’s not thought to have had any prewar service.
Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 13 February Share Posted 13 February I agree with Frogsmile. They are the Prince of Wales feathers of the Welsh Regiment.
davidbohl Posted 13 February Author Share Posted 13 February Thanks All, I was dubious about photo from the start, clicking about the family tree I've found another photo(not attached to JPT though) which looks like him wearing a 2/Lt uniform. That does look like Liverpool City Battalion, although once again unfortunately a poor image.

Almost identical to Kent Yeomanry’s White Horse of Kent over scroll inscribed INVICTA. Edited 13 February by FROGSMILE
CorporalPunishment Posted 13 February Share Posted 13 February He is clearly either Kent Cyclist Battalion or West Kent Yeomanry and the evidence points to the former. Pete.
FROGSMILE Posted 13 February Share Posted 13 February It certainly looks that way.
