mebu Posted 6 February Share Posted 6 February Bit of an odd question: just clearing a drawer, found some shrapnel balls from various visits over the years, noticed they all seem the same size, about 12mm. Question: out of interest, did British and Germans both use the same size balls?
AOK4 Posted 6 February Share Posted 6 February There are different sizes. I'll try to take some pics one of the days. Jan
Spaceman Posted 6 February Share Posted 6 February (edited) Just comparing the shrapnel shells used by the field guns at the start of WW1 (18-pdr and 7.7 cm Fk 96 n.A), the British used 41 shrapnel balls per lb compared with the Germans 45 per lb. I believe the German balls were ~12 mm in diameter with the British balls probably just over 0.5 mm larger assuming the same density of metal.
