Chris_Baker Posted 3 February Share Posted 3 February (edited) I am suddenly intrigued by mention of "Saint George's Dugouts", used by Field Ambulances for an ADS and other posts. This part of the diary of I Corps' DDMS gives the location (it lies west of Hulluch, behind the "Puits 14bis" subsector of the front). Does anyone know of its origins? Howard Posted 3 February Share Posted 3 February The 4 map references that include the "branches" are a long way apart, on the line of the Switch trench, over 1,100 yards. I have not seen points called St. George's anywhere near there. Howard

Chris The Feb 1916 WD of 45 Field Ambulance RAMC (15 Div) WO 95/1931 refers to George's post and Mary's post between Loos and Hulluch. I will try and work backwards to see if I can find why they were so named. Brian EDIT ADMS 15 Div 18/01/1916 refers to St George's dugout and cases being taken from there to Le Routoir farm Edited 3 February by brianmorris547 additional info
brianmorris547 Posted 3 February Share Posted 3 February (edited) 15 Div took over from 1 Div and this is from the WD of 1 Div ADMS December 1915, which reports on the construction of new ADS posts. I will check the RE WDs TNA/Ancestry WO 95/1242 Brian Edited 3 February by brianmorris547 typo
Chris_Baker Posted 4 February Author Share Posted 4 February That's terrific. Good sleuthing!
brianmorris547 Posted 4 February Share Posted 4 February The worksheets WD of 1 Div CRE records that the Field Companies were engaged on assisting the RAMC in constructing ADS posts without saying where they were. St Mary's must have been constructed shortly afterwards because it is named on a RAMC Order in the February 1916 WD of 2 Field Ambulance.
