horatio2 Posted 30 January Share Posted 30 January An interesting man. He was one of the significant number of RNAS ratings who did not transfer to the RAF in April 1918. He was serving in 20 Squadron RNAS, engaged in tank production and delivery at the Oldbury Works, and he remained there until demob a year later.. horatio2 Posted 30 January Share Posted 30 January (edited) @thedawnpatrol, Strictly speaking LM = Leading Mechanic was also his RNAS rating, not just his trade. He served with the Royal Naval Armoured Car Division (RNACD) and, since his civilian trade was Chauffeur, it is most likely that his RNACD trade was Driver/Mechanic. Sadly, ADM 188 RNAS records often do not give that level of trade detail. However, In this case there is a note that his transfer from the RNACD back to the RNAS in April 1917 was approved in the rating of LM(D) = Leading Mechanic (Driver).
